About this book
The Story of Russia is by R. Van Bergen, M.A., who is named on the title page as the author of The Story of Japan and The Story of China. It is dedicated to Henry Mather Lowman. The preface says recent events had drawn attention to Russia, a country little known in the United States, and that the author felt the need to study its history.
One passage describes what the Greeks believed about the lands to the north, with the one-eyed Arimaspians, the Gryphons who guarded gold and the Hyperboreans who lived beyond the north wind. Another tells of the taking of Azof, where a young officer, Peter Alexievitch, marches in the ranks, and the Patriarch, prelates and monasteries offer one ship for every 5,000 serfs. A passage on the east follows Muravieff, who founds Blagovestchensk and Khabarofka and is created Count Amoorsky.
