About this book

Family respectability comes under scrutiny in William Makepeace Thackeray's novel of English relatives, social ambition and private loyalties. The opening uses a quarrelsome company of fable animals to expose vanity, flattery and disguise, setting a satirical tone for the human story. Colonel Newcome, Clive and their extended family inhabit a world of dinners, courtship, money and competing expectations.

Ethel's dispute with Lady Kew makes these pressures personal. She describes the humiliation of being offered to prospective husbands and asks to remain with her father, whose newspaper she reads at breakfast. Alongside these domestic pressures, Clive's life among art students in Rome brings work, friendship and pleasure in his surroundings. Published in 1854, this broad family novel rewards readers interested in how affectionate ties become entangled with rank, and how social comedy can make room for personal hurt.
