About this book

Rain interrupts a visit to a mill beside the Neckar near Heidelberg, bringing the visitors indoors and turning their attention to a family portrait. The young woman in the picture, Anna Scherer, left papers explaining the fears behind her opposition to her daughter's marriage. That discovery introduces the title tale in Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell's collection, where a welcoming household becomes the entrance to a troubling family history.

The contents also include Curious if True, Six Weeks at Heppenheim, Libbie Marsh's Three Eras, and other short works. In the Heppenheim passage, a servant's proposed departure unsettles an entire household: children depend on her care, fellow servants question her treatment, and her employer struggles with his feelings. The Grey Woman and other Tales offers readers stories that move between suspense and the everyday pressures of work, affection, and family obligation. Small domestic exchanges reveal how quickly private judgments can affect other people's lives.
