About this book

The text says Swinburne was thoroughly steeped in Sappho, whom he considered "the supreme success, the final achievement of the poetic art." A quoted judgment holds that Sappho is simply nothing less, as she is certainly nothing more, than the greatest poet who ever was at all. Alfred Noyes is quoted from the poem In Memory of Swinburne, in which he writes of a Brother of Sappho.

The text says the influence of Sappho on Italian literature is also seen in the many Italian translations of some or all of the fragments. The text names, among others, Cappone (1670), Rogati (1783) and Leopardi (1816) in a list of those who have translated the famous folk-song. The writer says a copy dated 1696 of Anne Le Fèvre, Les Poësies d’Anacréon et de Sapho, is in his library, a second edition whose first was in 1681.
