About this book

Sara Crewe is a small, serious girl brought from India to London by her father, Captain Crewe, and left at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies, where her father's money makes her the school's show pupil. When news comes that he has died and his fortune is gone, Miss Minchin keeps her on as an unpaid errand girl and moves her up to a cold garret under the roof.

Hungry and shabbily dressed, Sara holds on to her dignity by imagining, and by small kindnesses, such as giving most of her buns to a starving girl outside a baker's shop. Next door lives an ailing Indian Gentleman with a Lascar servant and a monkey, and the friendship that grows across the rooftops slowly changes everything for her.

Frances Hodgson Burnett published this story in 1888 and later expanded it into the novel A Little Princess.
