About this book

A Brooklyn schoolboy known as Tembarom learns early how much a few coins can matter. After his mother dies, ten-year-old Tem sets out to sell newspapers, helped by a neighbor who lends him twenty cents. Frances Hodgson Burnett builds this 1913 novel around his practical resourcefulness, cheerful manner, and readiness to repay kindness, placing everyday generosity beside the hardships of city life.

Later, Tem and Miss Alicia pore over housing advertisements, planning how inexpensive furniture could fit into small rooms. Their delight in rocking chairs, rose-patterned crockery, and the prospect of a comfortable home brings ordinary comforts into focus amid much grander surroundings. The detailed prices and conversations give readers a close view of domestic hopes and social differences, while Tem's lively speech keeps the story rooted in his streetwise outlook.
