About this book

Set at the fictional St. Austin's, this early collection gathers the kind of English public-school life Wodehouse knew from his own boyhood: cricket matches decided at the last over, masters outwitted, exams dodged, and elaborate feuds played out between houses. Written when the author was still in his early twenties, the tales mix straight schoolboy adventure with flashes of the absurd comedy that would later make his name. A few short essays on school life round out the book. Readers who know only the Jeeves stories will find here the roots of that voice, already fond of clever boys, foolish authority, and the small dramas of ambition and pride.
