About this book
Tales of St. Austin's is credited to P. G. Wodehouse. The contents list names, among others, How Pillingshot Scored, The Odd Trick and The Prize Poem. The preface says most of these stories originally appeared in The Captain, and that the story entitled A Shocking Affair appears in print for the first time.
The text has Pillingshot finish toasting the muffins when the door opens and Venables, of Merevale's, comes in. The text says Venables was captain of the St Austin's team and that the match next Saturday was at Windybury. The text has its writer say that, after years of keen observation, he is inclined to think that the umpire keeps his bat by him, firstly, in order that no unlicensed hand shall commandeer it unbeknownst.
