About this book

The title page presents tragedies and fragments with notes and rhymed choral odes arranged in two parts. The introductory note presents seven surviving plays in chronological order, out of a total credited as seventy or eighty. A king says that fierce war must be risked against one side or the other, and that no escape from the situation is possible without trouble.

A speech describes the guilt of kindred blood as requiring a great atonement, with many victims falling to many gods. A speech to citizens counsels respect for a form of state that is neither lawless nor tyrannical, and warns against casting all fear out of the city.

About the author

Aeschylus

Aeschylus fought at Marathon and probably at Salamis, and his epitaph records the battle rather than the plays, which is said to have been his own instruction. He added a second actor to tragedy, which is the point at which drama becomes dialogue instead of a chorus with a soloist. Seven of perhaps ninety plays survive.
