About this book

From the heat of the sun to the fuel burned in a London fireplace, W. Mattieu Williams treats scientific questions as matters for ordinary readers. Published in 1883, this collection brings together short essays on astronomy, weather, coal, household ventilation and the behavior of materials. The opening chapter argues for a universal atmosphere and uses that proposal to explain solar heat, sunspots and other features of the heavens. Williams presents his reasoning forcefully, challenging calculations that he believes other writers have accepted too readily.

The discussion of coal supply brings science into contact with prices, mining depth, shipping and trade policy. Williams weighs the cost of digging farther underground against the cost of carrying American coal across the Atlantic. These chapters offer a view of nineteenth-century scientific debate, with large theories placed beside practical concerns about homes, industry and energy. Readers can follow how one writer connects physical explanations with economic choices.
