About this book

Scouting for Girls is the official handbook of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, in a sixth reprint dated 1925. Some pages leave room for a reader's name, troop and scout record, with lines for the Tenderfoot and Second Class tests, and show a statue of Magdelaine de Verchères, called the first Girl Scout in the New World.

Section IV, Who Are the Scouts?, looks back to pioneer days, when people had to be handy and resourceful, and names Natty Bumpo from Cooper's tales as the great example of an old Scout. Another passage on public housekeeping gives examples of what the state should do, such as free clinics and trained community nurses. The book also sets out tests with symbols, among them a telegraph pole for the Telegrapher, which asks for a set number of letters a minute in American Morse Code, and a seahorse for the Zoologist.
