About this book
Construction Work for Rural and Elementary Schools is credited to Virginia McGaw, described as a teacher in the Elementary School of Baltimore. The preface says that the work is divided into five parts, Cord Construction, Paper Construction, Wood Construction, Basketry and The School Garden. The preface also says that the volume has the same object, that of aiding the rural teacher by means of a few simple suggestions.
The section on knots has the aim to teach the names of different knots, how they are tied, and the utilitarian value of each, and names the overhand knot, the square knot and the Granny knot. One problem is to construct a napkin ring of No. 5 reed, and another is to construct a simple mat of reed. A passage on industrial outside work, which it calls superior to that of the classroom, gives reasons: the teacher has but a small number of children under her care at one time and so is enabled to learn more of each individual nature.
