About this book

A group of workers teaching one another in evening classes gives Samuel Smiles his opening example of personal improvement. Their meetings move from a cottage to a garden and then to a rented room as attendance grows. Drawing on this shared effort, Smiles gathers anecdotes about learning, work and character. His advice stresses patient application and independent effort, while connecting individual progress with responsibility toward other people.

The discussion gives failure a place in education, treating setbacks as opportunities to develop judgment and persistence. In the account of Richard Foley, a nail maker travels to Sweden to study ironworking machinery, then returns to England with plans that initially disappoint. Workshop problems make the argument about perseverance concrete. Readers interested in the history of moral education can examine how Smiles uses working lives to explain duty, ambition and useful knowledge. His stated measure of achievement includes both the purpose pursued and the effort devoted to it.
