About this book
The biography of George Stephenson and his son Robert Stephenson includes a history of the invention and introduction of the railway locomotive. The account of milk traffic describes growth that was sometimes rapid, almost sudden, and says the Great Western carried very little milk into London before 1865. The account says that the largest proportion of milk carried by the Great Western came from beyond Swindon in Wiltshire, about 100 miles from London.
The surveying account describes surveyors who were unpracticed and incompetent, saying that their work had badly served the person employing them. A letter to Mr. Sandars, dated the 27th of September, 1824, expresses fear that Auty had been paid by canal proprietors to botch the work.
