About this book
Seneca Myths and Folk Tales is by Arthur C. Parker, archaeologist at the New York State Museum, and its title page is dated Buffalo, New York, 1923. A section headed Themes and Materials says that Seneca folk-tales follow certain characteristic types of action.
One passage describes the interior of a bark longhouse, with corn, smoked meat, dried fish and pumpkins, and a fireplace at every eight paces. In one tale a youth ties his long hair into a string from the lodge door to a lake and calls two great white otters out of it, and a witch woman leaps from her bed in the lodge. The list of illustrations names paintings by Richard J. Tucker, photographs, and drawings by Jesse Cornplanter such as The Thunder Serpent, The Snow Snake Game, The Bear Dance and The Horned Serpent.
