About this book

A young fawn takes his mother's warnings less seriously as his legs grow stronger and the woods become familiar. In Arthur Scott Bailey's animal tale, Nimble learns that spots can hide him from sight without protecting him from every danger. The wooded slopes near Blue Mountain and Farmer Green's garden provide a setting where curiosity repeatedly tests good advice.

Short chapters turn meetings with talking animals into lessons about caution, kindness, and understanding other creatures. A snowy wait outside Cuffy Bear's cave brings an unhelpful encounter with Peter Mink and an explanation from Mr. Grouse about winter sleep. Later, Nimble's changing antlers cause another misunderstanding. Published in 1922, the story gives children an approachable mixture of woodland observation and comic conversation, with a lively young deer whose confidence often runs ahead of his knowledge.
