About this book
Sextus Empiricus and Greek Scepticism is a thesis accepted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Bern, Switzerland, in November 1897, by Mary Mills Patrick. The title page says it is accompanied by a translation from the Greek of the first book of the Pyrrhonic Sketches by Sextus Empiricus. The preface says the treatise was prepared for students of Greek philosophy, because few sources of information on the teachings of Pyrrhonism are available in English.
One passage discusses which school Sextus belonged to, citing Pappenheim, Zeller, Brochard and Natorp, with Greek quotations and numbered footnotes. Another describes Pyrrho, whose aim was ἀταραξία, and compares the pictures of him given by Diogenes and by Cicero. A further passage takes up the Heraclitans and the claim that contradictory predicates appear to apply to the same thing.
