About this book
Folklore of Wells is a study of water-worship in East and West by R. P. Masani. The contents list gives a Part I, Folklore of Bombay Wells, with a chapter titled Sanctity of Water that covers, among others, the origin of fevers, the wrath of Shiva and the closing of wells. A contents entry for a chapter on animal deities of water mentions the European belief in the presence of animals or fish as the presiding spirits of water.
The introduction says the little book owes its inspiration to office routine, and that the writer, as Municipal Secretary of Bombay, received several protests against requisitions for the closing of wells. The text says that around the Well in Sychnant Valley grew a town which the Saxons named Treffynion, and which became known to the Normans as Haliwell, the hallowed or holy well. The text says the flag was presented to the saint only and solely as a thank-offering for a wish fulfilled.
