About this book

A stolen overcoat prompts an old soldier to recall a man whose dishonesty did not erase his claim to compassion. This opening situation in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Short Stories grows out of a lonely bachelor's household, where the arrival of a lodger brings conversation into an otherwise quiet life. Agrafena, the housekeeper, helps arrange the lodging, and Astafy Ivanovitch supplies the story that complicates his own stern opinion of thieves.

The collection brings together nine stories in English translation, with Russian social life as its setting. In another excerpt, Ivan Andreyitch follows a suspected rival from a theatre to an apartment, then discovers that his certainty has led him into an embarrassing mistake. Detailed dialogue and anxious shifts of thought give both passages their movement. Readers can encounter moral uncertainty and social comedy side by side, watching characters explain themselves even as their actions expose what they fail to understand.
