About this book

At a hotel in Roulettenberg, a Russian household spends money with a confidence its private conversations do not support. Alexis Ivanovitch returns to the General's service to find cold welcomes, grand displays of wealth and little clarity about where the funds have come from. His attention keeps returning to Polina Alexandrovna, whose indifference unsettles him. Through his first-person account, Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel places wounded pride beside financial dependence and the urge to gamble.

The casino gives these tensions a different shape. An elderly woman known as the Grandmother insists on backing zero at roulette, dismisses cautions and becomes impatient with every turn of the wheel. Her certainty brings out the gap between chance and a player's belief in personal judgment. Readers interested in psychological fiction will find close observation of impulsive decisions, shifting social rank and the pressure money puts on relationships.
