About this book

A delayed train leaves two travellers in the company of a stranger whose confident talk turns into a story about an isolated marble palace. He has taken a job collecting cotton duties and chooses to live there, ignoring warnings about its nights. By the river, he hears footsteps and laughter without seeing anyone. The title story builds its unease through this difference between visible surroundings and the sounds of an apparently vanished world.

Rabindranath Tagore's 1916 collection presents Bengali short stories in English translation. Its preface credits several translators and identifies The Victory as the author's own translation. The palace tale's strange perceptions sit beside a more intimate account of a woman losing her sight while her husband and brother disagree over her care. Her efforts to calm their conflict bring affection, guilt and family obligations into the same conversation.
