About this book

Sidney Lanier by Edwin Mims has a preface saying the volume is a biography of Lanier rather than a critical study of his work. The preface says the story of Lanier is told, so far as possible, in his own words, or in the words of those who knew him most intimately. The preface adds that if undue emphasis was placed on the early part of his career, it was intentional, since that is the part of his life about which least is known.

Sterling Lanier, called the grandfather of the poet, lived for a while in Athens, Ga., and was afterwards a hotel-keeper in Macon and Montgomery. A letter dated 195 Dean St., Brooklyn, N.Y., August 15, 1875, says "I did not dream, my dear friend, of giving you anything in the least approaching the nature of a worry." Lanier wrote to Mr. Stedman that in all directions the poetic art was suffering from the shameful circumstance that criticism was without a scientific basis.
