Signalling Across Space Without Wires is by Prof. Oliver J. Lodge, F.R.S., and describes itself as a description of the work of Hertz & his successors. The third edition carries additional remarks concerning the application to telegraphy, and later developments. Appendix V, Photo-Electric Researches of M. Auguste Righi, says that M. Righi has observed the following facts.
A figure caption describes Slaby's arrangement of Coherer and of tapper-back and relay connections. The text says that, to find to what depths the magnetism penetrated, Birkeland inserted hollow ferruginous drums into A, measured their effect, and then plunged solid cylinders into them to see whether the effect increased. The text reports that in oxygen the loss of charge was not quite so rapid, and that in CO₂ the rapidity of loss was extreme.
