About this book
Life and Matter is presented as a criticism of Professor Haeckel’s Riddle of the Universe and an expansion of a presidential address to the Birmingham and Midland Institute. The author calls magnetism the best analogy to life that he can presently think of, describing magnets that induce magnetic properties in other pieces of steel.
The discussion suggests there is some reason to suppose that whatever actually exists must in some way be perpetual, while accidental relations may be temporary. The author says he has reason to believe that a trace of individuality can cling to terrestrial objects vaguely and almost imperceptibly, yet be detected by people with suitable faculties.
