About this book

A remote seaboard county in northern Scotland turns on one man: Simon Rattar, procurator fiscal, the official who sets every criminal process in motion. Locals call him Silent Simon. He is thickset and grizzled, an elder of the Kirk, a bachelor who answers most questions with a grunt. Then small things stop fitting. A stranger is seen in his garden after dark, and a shaving cut shows up on the chin of a man whose hand was always steady as a rock. When Sir Reginald Cromarty is killed at Keldale House, the inquiry falls to Rattar himself, and a private enquiry agent named F. T. Carrington arrives to look harder at what the official version leaves out. Clouston built his name on farce, and the wit survives the change of key.
