About this book

A naval observation balloon breaks free above the North Sea in August 1914, carrying Merton and Rutherford into thick fog. Merton has only a week of experience aboard ship, while Rutherford brings the confidence of a naval officer. With the cruiser disappearing below them and the wind blowing towards the German coast, they must decide when to leave the basket and trust their parachutes. Their disagreement gives this opening adventure a tense, personal edge, told through Merton's anxious thoughts and dry humour.

Later, the narrator waits for Bolton to call, using an elaborate invented account to prepare Dr. Rendall for a possible evening outing. When the doctor brings news of Bolton's death, that expected visit becomes part of a troubling mystery. The narrator tries to connect a suspected agency, a lost source of information, and an encounter at a lonely coastal spot. This novel offers both the immediate uncertainty of danger at sea and the careful weighing of clues, with a conversational voice that exposes the narrator's doubts.
