About this book
J. Storer Clouston's The Prodigal Father was published in 1909 and is divided into parts, with an Introductory section before Part I. One passage follows Heriot Walkingshaw home, where the sight of his dignified house soothes him a little. Mrs. Walkingshaw has been dead for many years, and a maiden sister, a thin, elderly lady, runs the household. When she drives out in the carriage, her niece Jean stays behind to write letters, gives a little skip and smiles mysteriously.
In another passage, a conversation in a cab mentions a young fellow who has managed to sell one or two pictures, and Mr. Walkingshaw says, "I don't throw my money away, Frank," before paying the cabman half a crown. In a third, a young man says to Andrew, "Don't you recognize your own son?" and Andrew's mind reels. The book is dedicated to an unknown correspondent who once made a certain suggestion.
