About this book
Sketch of Handel and Beethoven, by Thomas Hanly Ball, is two lectures delivered in the lecture hall of the Wimbledon Village Club on Monday evening, Dec. 14, 1863, and Monday evening, Jan. 11, 1864. A contents list names a dedication, a preface, a sketch of Handel, a sketch of Beethoven, and notes. The writer says it is scarcely necessary for him to say that biographical lectures are chiefly the result of reading and research.
A part labelled The Pigeon says that "Let me wander not unseen" is considered one of Handel's finest inspirations, and Hawkins is quoted on a story about the air that Mr. John Lockman relates, assuring his reader that he was an eye-witness. The speaker addresses Beethoven with the words that brains are the highest nobility, if not the richest, and says he loves birth and ancestry when they are incentives to exertion, not the title deeds to sloth.
