About this book
Sleight of Hand is a practical manual of legerdemain for amateurs and others by Edwin Thomas Sachs. The contents list Part I, Drawing-room Magic, with chapters on Palming, Tricks with Coins, Tricks with Common Objects, Tricks with Cups and Balls, Tricks with Handkerchiefs, Chinese Tricks, Tricks at Table and Tricks with Cards.
The manual says one must always see, in his mind's eye, two or three moves ahead, so that no hitch or hesitation occurs. The manual also says the trick of dancing a coin in a glass is so well known that no one with any desire for a reputation as a prestidigitateur would introduce it by itself. A lemon trick has the performer let several persons smell at the fruit and borrow a small handkerchief, the smaller the better. The Mesmerised Poker has the performer take a poker and stand it up on one end, and after two or three fruitless attempts it remains standing without the aid of any visible support.
