About this book
Society, with the subtitle Its Origin and Development, is by Henry Kalloch Rowe, who is named on the title page as an associate professor of history and sociology.
The preface compares the study of social life to biology: cross-sections of specimens show structure and watching growth shows function, so a child is to be watched in the family, the community and the larger world. One passage describes an older college where students found rooms in an ill-equipped dormitory or private house and there were no libraries worthy of the name. Another gives a short history of the labor union, saying it is a product of the nineteenth century, with much experimenting before 1850. A further passage says criticism and discussion should be welcome, and names free speech and a free press as safety-valves.
