About this book
Karl Groos, professor of philosophy at the University of Basel and author of The Play of Animals, wrote this study of play among people. It is translated with the author's co-operation by Elizabeth L. Baldwin, with an editor's preface by J. Mark Baldwin of Princeton, who also wrote a preface and appendix for the earlier volume.
One passage takes up Darwin's idea that arts such as music and poetry arose from courtship. It notes that monkeys show little of it, and that among primitive races an exclusive link between music or poetry and courtship cannot be assumed. The author then turns to the psychology of play, looking at which arts and aesthetic pleasures may have arisen apart from it. Another passage gathers teasing rhymes and verses: a rain rhyme in dialect, a Bohemian goldfinch song, the poetic contests of youths and maidens at mountain weddings, and a rhyme mocking religious difference. Numbered footnotes cite many sources.
