About this book
The Sisters of Lady Jane Grey and Their Wicked Grandfather is by Richard Davey. A chapter headed The Last Days of Suffolk and of the Queen-Duchess says that, notwithstanding Mary Tudor’s exalted rank, her husband neglected her. The text says that the death of the young Earl of Lincoln, her only son, of the sweating sickness, which occurred in 1527 when he was only twelve years old, affected her health, so that she retired from London and spent nearly all her time at Westhorpe Hall.
Lady Katherine’s entry into what we should now call society took place on the 20th August, 1547, when Bess of Hardwick married her second husband, Sir William Cavendish. On September 1, the Lady Mary was removed to her place of exile, Mr. William Hawtrey’s mansion, The Chequers, even then a very old house. Lady Mary Grey, whose only thought was to regain her freedom, wrote to Cecil towards the end of the year 1565. A speaker says he will have no Guildfords, Popincourts, or other jades to stand betwixt him and his wife, and that each kiss his wife gives him shall cost him a gem.
