About this book

Henry James recalls his meetings and conversations with Thomas Carlyle, the Scottish historian and philosopher, through memories of their personal acquaintance. The account combines affection for Carlyle's hospitality and straightforward manners with criticism of his outlook. James questions the reputation Carlyle enjoyed as a thinker, distinguishing his gifts as a critic from the broader sympathy James expects of a philosophical teacher.
