About this book
The preface says that when the venture has been made of dealing with historical events and characters, it always seems fair towards the reader to avow what liberties have been taken. The preface refers to the almost unique relations that subsisted between Henry V. and his prisoner, James I. of Scotland. The preface says that James’s expedition to Scotland is wholly imaginary.
Lilias's uncle asks who is his keeper, and Sir James rather hastily answers the Earl of Somerset, upon which Lilias exclaims whether the King, too, is not in his charge. Henry, by the advice of Dr. Bennet, his almoner, resolved that the feast should be limited to the official guests. Malcolm says that Ralf Percy was his dear old companion, and Lilias asks whether he is the one who was so bold and daring.
