About this book

Village gossip reaches a minister just as he is trying to concentrate on his reading. Mr. Lindsay, absorbed in birds and plants, becomes uneasy after overhearing talk about Rose Ellen Mellen and her mother's supposed plans for him. Rose Ellen brings him a rare goldenrod, while Mrs. Mellen's sudden difficulty hearing turns ordinary household conversation into a succession of misunderstandings. Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards builds the opening of Some Say around this mixture of embarrassment, affection and local talk.

The companion tale, Neighbours in Cyrus, brings attention to sewing, sickness and the demands people place on one another. Anne Peace tends to Mrs. Means and fits Jenny Miller's dress, trying to keep peace when criticism stirs resentment. These stories offer younger readers domestic scenes in which kindness requires patience, and speech can either comfort a neighbour or make a difficult day harder.
