About this book
The foreword discusses the Iliad and the Odyssey, saying that no one knows whether Homer composed the poems or whether many different poets produced them. Autolycus chooses the name Odysseus, predicts travels over land and sea, and asks that the child be sent to his halls after his twelfth birthday.
Odysseus tells his mother that he longs to visit his grandfather, climb Parnassus, hear the Muses, and return quickly to Ithaca. Iphitus speaks about his father Eurytus and the grief associated with his bow, attributing the household’s misfortunes to his father’s excessive pride. Sinon, a young Hellene found by the shore, tells the Trojans a false story about wrongs he claims to have suffered at Odysseus’s hands.
