About this book
The contents set out the production and propagation of sound, experiments with sounding bodies in a vacuum, and the reflection, refraction and diffraction of sound. The discussion of signals attributes an observed lack of reciprocity to wind blowing against the shore signal and in favour of the ship signal.
The section on musical flames explains that air passing over a gas flame enclosed in a tube is usually enough to make the flame sing spontaneously. The account of reflected pulses says their timed shocks can accumulate so powerfully that they beat a flame into extinction, even when the flame is very large. The experiments with calico use layers stretched on a wire frame and placed close together as a pad that may represent a dense acoustic cloud.
