About this book

The book is the Address Delivered Before the British Association Assembled at Belfast, with additions by John Tyndall. A note by John Tyndall, dated September 16, 1874 at the Athenæum Club, says that to coarser attacks and denunciations he pays no attention. The address says that an impulse inherent in primeval man turned his thoughts and questionings betimes towards the sources of natural phenomena.

A quoted speaker asks whether one can see, or dream, or in any way imagine how sensation, thought, and emotion are to arise from individually dead atoms. The address says the moral glow of Socrates has in it nothing incompatible with the physics of Anaxagoras, which he so much scorned.
