About this book

Before the Arcturus leaves for Mars, its chief pilot faces an awkward demand: keep passengers comfortable, meet a strict timetable and avoid hazardous meteor swarms. Steve Stevens joins the control room to check the calculations behind those demands. His doubts about the tracking stations turn a routine departure into a problem of measurement, navigation and judgment. E. E. Smith's 1931 science fiction novel imagines interplanetary travel as a working transport system, complete with instruments, crew checks and disagreements over responsibility.

The later action gives that technical detail a more urgent purpose. Stevens and Nadia face hostile spherical spacecraft, while a reflective shield and carefully directed projectiles determine whether their vessel can survive. Explanations of heat, power and protective materials sit alongside rapid combat scenes. Readers interested in early space adventure will find a story built around machinery and practical ingenuity, with imagined scientific solutions shaping the dangers its characters encounter.
