Eight thousand colonists are racing toward a new home when the Gern Empire stops their ship. Irene hears the engines fall silent and waits with her young son Billy for news of her husband. With the air supply failing, the passengers must accept terms that divide them by occupation and threaten to separate their families. Tom Godwin begins this 1958 science fiction novel with the collapse of a carefully prepared escape plan.

The later excerpt shifts from the damaged spacecraft to exploration on an unfamiliar planet. Two travelers search for minerals, contend with intense summer heat and encounter small animals whose repeated speech suggests a telepathic link. These creatures, called mockers, introduce curiosity and companionship into the struggle for supplies. Readers interested in survival fiction will find practical problems, strange wildlife and the tension between imperial power and vulnerable human communities.
