About this book
St. Dionysius of Alexandria: Letters and Treatises is a volume by Dionysius of Alexandria. The preface says its writer was invited to translate the Letters and some of the other more certainly genuine fragments that remain into English for the present series. The book says the Prefect of Egypt, Sabinus, lost no time in attacking Dionysius and his followers, and that Dionysius himself, after waiting four days, fled and was sought for by a secret service messenger.
One passage asks how the mighty ocean which man cannot cross could overspread and sweep away this horrid flood, and what other water could cleanse all this but the water which itself cleanseth all things. A note says the reference is to Manichean views of the worst kind, namely that matter is not only without beginning, but the source of evil and altogether independent of God.
