About this book
The Epistles of St. Peter and St. Jude Preached and Explained is by Martin Luther, marked Wittemberg, 1523-4, and translated with preface and notes by E. H. Gillett. The preface by the translator says that several years ago, among the dusty piles of old pamphlets stored away upon the upper shelves of the Union Theological Seminary library, the translator met with several works of Luther, in the original editions.
The book tells its reader: "You must be holy, but you must also beware against imagining that you are holy through yourself or by your own merit." The book also says to keep your tongue silent even against your enemies, and it cites the passage in the prophet that a guileful heart makes guileful tongue and lips. A verse marked V. 12, 13 reads that the heavens shall pass away by fire and the elements shall be melted with fervent heat, but that we look for a new heaven and a new earth, according to his promise, in which dwelleth righteousness.
