About this book

For Alan Donnell, returning to Earth means arriving among people whose lives have moved years ahead of his own. Raised aboard the starship Valhalla, he turns seventeen as the ship approaches its home planet. Travel near the speed of light has separated the Spacers from the people who remain on Earth, creating rival communities with different customs and deep mutual suspicion. Alan's twin brother Steve has already left shipboard life, and the difference in their ages gives Alan an urgent reason to look beyond his father's traditions.

Robert Silverberg's 1958 science fiction novel makes the effects of space travel a problem of family and belonging. Alan's search brings him into contact with Max Hawkes, a gambler offering friendship and a new livelihood, while his alien companion Rat urges caution. Alongside these uncertain loyalties stands the possibility of a faster drive that could change the relationship between the two communities.
