About this book
The Rocky Mountain Wonderland is by Enos A. Mills and comes with illustrations from photographs. The preface says Colorado has one thousand peaks that rise more than two miles into the sky, and that about one hundred and fifty of these reach up beyond thirteen thousand feet in altitude. The preface says an enormous area is entirely above the limits of tree-growth, but that the heights above the timber-line are far from being barren and lifeless.
The text quotes Clarence King in his Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada on the effects of altitude. The text tells of two young people who met for the first time in one of the writer’s climbing parties and were married thirty days afterward. The text says a grizzly is ever on guard and in places of possible ambush is extremely cautious. The text says the climate of the eastern slope is comparatively dry and mild, and that the winters are sunny, but little snow falls.
