About this book
Stories from the Iliad is retold by H. L. Havell. H. L. Havell is listed as the author of Stories from Herodotus, Stories from Greek Tragedy, Stories from the Æneid and Stories from the Odyssey, among others. A section headed The Human Characters says that at the head of the Greek army stands Agamemnon, whose authority rests on his personal prowess, his vast wealth, and the extent of his dominions. Telamonian Ajax is called the mightiest champion of Greece after Achilles, and the chief bulwark of the Greeks against the impetuous valour of Hector.
A character named Meriones says he came to fetch a spear because his own was broken in the fight. A character named Idomeneus says spears there are in plenty in his tent, and helmets, and shields. A speaker reproaches the gods, who were met in full assembly, for their cruel indifference, asking whether there is no pity and no justice left in heaven.
