About this book

Between Westminster Bridge and Brighton's Aquarium, Charles G. Harper follows a road shaped by turnpikes, coaching routes, railway competition and changing habits of travel. His illustrated history sets out the main route through Croydon, Redhill, Horley, Crawley and Cuckfield, alongside alternatives through Sutton and Reigate. The opening explains how older lanes became improved roads and how tolls gradually disappeared, making the highway's development a story of local decisions as well as movement towards the coast.

Along the way, Harper examines surviving milestones and the differing distances they record. At Purley and Smitham Bottom, his account turns to expanding towns, villas, shops and the railway works altering the landscape. He writes with a sharp eye for awkward changes and an interest in how travellers reached Brighton most quickly.
