About this book
Instructions on Modern American Bridge Building is a book by G. B. N. Tower. The preface says the little treatise was written for the purpose of supplying a want felt by the author while giving instruction upon the subject. The same preface says the work was intended for an aid to the young Engineer, and is not to be considered as a complete substitute for the more elaborate works on the subject. The full title adds practical applications and examples, estimates of quantities, and valuable tables.
The book describes the simplest bridge that can be built as a single beam, or stick of timber, spanning the opening between the abutments, of very limited application, only for spans of 20 feet and less. For tie rods, the book gives a strain of 67200 lbs. for each, an area of 4.48 sq. inches at 15,000 lbs. per square inch, and, by Vose's Tables, a diameter of 2½ inches.
