About this book

A storm on Funâfala brings three fishermen to a coral cave, where a young girl sits singing toward the sea. Louis Becke's short story follows the narrator, the ship's mate Senior, and their companion Suka as they shelter beside Susâni. Suka introduces the visitors gently, prepares food, and explains the islanders' belief that the child is under God's special protection.

The setting is the ring of islands around Funafuti lagoon, described through coconut gathering, reef fishing, sudden rain, and restless surf. Within this coastal world, a shared meal becomes an occasion for care and reflection. Senior's strong response to Susâni gives the encounter a religious and emotional intensity. Readers interested in Pacific fiction can find here both close attention to island surroundings and a period narrator's troubled account of the effects of outside contact on local communities.
