About this book

On steep rocks off a deserted bay, David makes a solitary home in the hope of drawing closer to God. Once a fisher-boy in a hard household, he has grown into a capable fisherman whose inward life is shaped by prayer. A dream of Christ walking over the water prompts his decision to live in a cave among the sea birds. This opening gives Arthur Christopher Benson's collection of short stories a setting where practical survival and spiritual longing meet.

The coastal world returns in "Out of the Sea," which begins in Blea-on-the-Sands, a poor fishing village with a storm-damaged church. Father Thomas cares for his small congregation while the building falls into decay. Detailed descriptions of tides, winds and isolated homes give the religious concerns a physical setting. Readers interested in stories of faith can find here an emphasis on ordinary work, kindness and the search for a purpose.
