About this book
Sweet Hampstead and Its Associations is by Caroline A. White. Sweet Hampstead is paired with a line credited to Leigh Hunt, “A village revelling in varieties.” A dedication is addressed to the Conservators of the Heath and to all who love “Sweet Hampstead” for its own sake.
George Steevens, the text says, lived in retirement at Hampstead for nearly thirty years, “excluding all local acquaintance.” The author recalls that a walk from the White Stone Pond often led to the Nine Elms and the old bench beneath them. A resting-place said to have been the favourite of Pope and Murray is described. The old church is recorded as taken down in the spring of 1745, with the present structure consecrated by Dr. Gilbert, Bishop of Llandaff, in October, 1747.
